Christmas At uShaka!
An enormous 12.5m high custom-made Christmas tree has been erected at the entrance of uShaka Marine World, just in time for Christmas!
The idea to create a larger-than-life Christmas tree was inspired by the iconic display of decorations in Rockefeller Centre in New York City, the gigantic fibre optic tree which adorns Sydney, Australia, and the whimsical decorations in Vienna, Austria.
“Our idea was to custom-make Durban’s largest Christmas tree,” said Mike Prentice, Spar Group Marketing Director. “We wanted the tree to be 100% made in South Africa and lit by a multitude of LED lights – all locally designed and manufactured. We want to revisit the nostalgia of Christmas and create a beautiful and iconic statement in a public place which can be enjoyed by both locals and visitors,” he added.
The city’s best design team - who were responsible for the creation of the tree and its marine artwork - were Nevon Singh from Magic Lighting in Montclair, and Robin Opperman and his team from Umcebo Design.
“We are playing to the paradox that the tree decorated by fish, is made completely from recyclable materials that can be found lying on our beaches– the very objects which play a role in destroying our marine biodiversity. This is aimed at sending out a message about the importance of recycling,” reflected Opperman.
“We are delighted to have this Christmas tree make its home at uShaka Marine World over the festive season, as well as this partnership which has been developed together with Spar and Umcebo Design. We look forward to sharing this unique Christmas tree with all our visitors and are excited to have a little more Christmas spirit added to the festive season,” added uShaka CEO, Stella Khumalo.
