uShaka Gets a Petrel
The rainy weather along the KZN coast, brought an unusual visitor all the way from down under, to uShaka Beach!
This afternoon a Great-winged Petrel (Pterodroma Macroptera) was found on the beach at uShaka – exhausted and without even enough energy to resist being picked up.
Luckily for the Petrel, the locals who picked him up handed over to an uShaka Sea World staff member.
It is most probable that the Petrel, who breeds in the southern hemisphere and is found on Southern Australian and Northern New Zealand islands, was blown off course by recent strong winds.
He will rest and recover under the watchful eyes of the Animal Health team before he is taken out to sea and released.
